How Do Economists Really Think About the Environment?

چکیده
On a topic like the environment, communication among scholars from different disciplines in the natural and social sciences is both important and difficult, but such communication has been far from perfect. Economists themselves may have contributed to some rather fundamental misunderstandings about how economists think about the environment, perhaps through our enthusiasm for market solutions, perhaps by neglecting to make explicit all of the necessary qualifications, and perhaps simply by the use of jargon that has specific meaning only to other economists. In this brief essay, we seek to clarify some of these misunderstandings and thus to improve future interdisciplinary communication. We hope that natural scientists and other non-economists will take economic analysis and prescriptions more seriously when they see tempered enthusiasm, explicit qualifications, and better definitions. Our method is to posit a series of prevalent Amyths@ regarding how economists think about the natural environment. We then explain how each myth might have originated from statements by economists that were meant to summarize a more qualified analysis. In this way, we hope to explain how economists really do think about the natural environment.

The opportunity here is really to bring together a group of colleagues to think about some of the issues around approaches to valuation of human health effects—both mortality and morbidity. These kinds of issues are particularly important to the Agency. The group that we expect to be interacting with over the next two-and-a-half days makes up a broad section of the scientific community and the ...
متن کاملDeveloping methods that really do value the 'Q' in the QALY.
Most health economists recommend that improvements in health be valued by asking members of the general public to imagine themselves in different states of health and then to think about how many years of life they would give up or what risk of death they would be willing to accept in order to be in full health. In this paper, I argue that preferences are not a very good guide to future experie...
متن کاملHow to Set up an Effective Food Tax?; Comment on “Food Taxes: A New Holy Grail?”
Whereas public information campaigns have failed to reverse the rising trend in obesity, economists support food taxes as they suggest they can force individuals to change their eating behavior and make the agro-food industry think more about healthy food products. Excise taxes based on the unhealthy nutrient content would be more effective since they impact more on unhealthy food products than...

G and Katz’s magnum opus, The Race between Education and Technology, rivals Becker’s Human Capital in ambition and potential influence over the economics profession and beyond. Becker formulated a new and empirically fruitful framework for economists and policymakers to think about skills—how they are used, how markets price them, and how and why workers and firms invest in them. The way most e...

was revived with the emergence of cognitive ethology. And the cycle of excess is being repeated, I think. All animals are proving to be really, really clever, and, more remarkably, in very human-like ways. Hmmm. That's not a very interesting kind of evolution. And I wonder if a lot of the results we're getting don't have more to do with the way we're conceptualizing the problems we put to anima...
